Avril Ward, an artist and former student of mine who now lives in Grand Cayman, recently mentioned me in her newsletter. I think she has heaps of talent, so I thought I’d return the favour by mentioning where you can find Avril’s website: Here.
I am the currently chairman of The African Art Centre, a non-profit organisation which is committed to development work – specifically of african art and artists. The Centre teaches arts and crafts and provides an outlet for approximately 2000 artists and crafters to sell their wares. It is also a place where they can learn realistic marketing and fashion trends and pricing. And it is my favourite charity. Learn more at their website.
Kizo Gallery also hosts the annual Heritage Arts Festival. The festival is unusual in that it has visual arts as the primary focus and I think it is just what Durban and we artists needed in the region. I sincerely hope that it becomes one of South Africa’s best-known art festivals. Find more details here.
In 2006, Neil Wright authored and published a book on my life and art entitled Meeting Carl Roberts. Neil did such a splendid job with the book that it was awarded a Bronze at the Sappi Awards in 2007.
To order a copy, please contact me. There are a limited number of copies still available @ R300 each (excl. postage and packaging).
“… This book is a gallery of Carl’s work, representing most of his important pieces to date. An informative and sensitive analysis of Carl’s art is presented in the text… It is a must-read for all those interested in art and, more especially, lovers of art.” – From the back cover
“This book’s comprehensive and beautifully printed and catalogued illustrations reveal how his work evolves and mutates from natural and found forms to complex and finished artworks. It will be a welcome addition to the growing canon of South African art books.” – Robert Brooks, Emeritus Professor of Fine Art, Rhodes University
“Carl’s work is playfully magical, its strength derives from sound craftsmanship and an ability to coax imagery of great subtlety and humour from what to others is mere detritus. This is no mean feat.” – Brendan Bell, Curator, Tatham Art Gallery, Pietermaritzburg
